The following questions and estimated solutions are presented by 8th graders at Harwood Union Middle School in honor of Enrico Fermi. The blog is inspired by a modern day Fermi geek, Dr. Aaron Santos, who writes his own blog, A Diary of Numbers. Check out his link in the side bar.

How many McDonald's does it take to completely cover the earth?
1. Background Story:
My Fermi problem is, hqow many McDonalds does it take to completely cover the earth?
Measured in square feet. I chose this problem because I have heard lots about 'McDonalds taking over the world' so I figured that I could see how many Mcdonalds it would really take to 'take over the world'.
2. Ask Yourself This:
1.) How many square feet is the earths surface?
2.) How many square feet is the average McDonalds area?
3.) What is the final number?
3. Helpful Hints:
The Earths surface is 5,490,383,247,360,000 square feet, I looked it up on the internet.
The minimum square footage of a McDonalds resturant is 2,000 square feet.
4. Construct a Formula:
Earths surface divided by the square footage of the McDonalds area equals the number of the answer.
5. Messy Math:
5,490,383,247,360,000 divided by 2,000 = 274691623680
It would take 274,691,623,680 McDonalds to cover the entire surface of the earth.
