1. Background Story[a]:
Have you ever wondered how many cells are in one strand of hair? What about in your entire body!! If you've wondered that then you must read on and you will learn just how many cells are in your body and how small cells truly are. I chose this problem because I wanted to know how many microscopic pieces my body is made up of.
2. Ask Yourself This:
How big is the average cell?
How much does the average cell weigh?
How compact are cells?
3. Helpful Hints:
- The average human cell weighs 27 picograms.
- Cells vary in size shape and weight.
- Some cells are circular and some cells are rectangular.
- Cells usually have a fraction of space in between them.
The problem is mainly estimation because i’m figuring it out based on the average weight of a cell and the weight of me. Another big estimation is me basing it off my weight in pounds. This is a estimation because i’m just using my weight of 110 and for all I know I could be 110 ½. Half a pound may not seem like that much but when it comes down to cells its millions of them.
4. Construct a Formula:
Average weight of a human cell > how many cells weigh a pound > that number*110= How many cells my body is made up of.
5. Messy Math: [b]
cell weight / 27 picograms
1000000000000 picograms per gram (divided by) 27 picograms=
37037037037 cells per gram
37037037037*453.5=16796296296300 (Cells per gram*grams per pound)
16796296296300*110= 1847592592593000 cells in my body
6. Answer:
There are 1847592592593000 cells in my body.
2.0*10/15 cells in my body
That's about as many inches as it takes to go from the earth to the sun and back!
